The Sidney Prize and Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize

The Sydney Prize honors journalist Sidney Hillman’s dedication to journalism by honoring an exceptional piece that exposes social injustice. Nominees must have written an article or column published during the prior month and submitted by the last day of each month; winners will receive a $500 honorarium as well as a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel designed by SHOT (Society for the History of Technology). The Sydney Prize is administered by SHOT (Society for the History of Technology).

Dr. Sidney Edelstein was an esteemed dyes expert, founder of a specialty chemical manufacturing firm and major donor to SHOT who established this award to recognize outstanding scholarship in the history of technology. Each year the Board of Directors selects one distinguished scholar in this field as recipient for this prize – which comes with a stipend of $3500 and plaque as presented by Ruth Edelstein Barish herself – all paid for by his family through Ruth’s generous donation.

In 2024, the Sir Sidney Poitier Peace Prize was given to Black Lives Matter – established by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi following George Zimmerman’s 2013 killing of black teenager Trayvon Martin by US neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman – as part of their human rights movement. A ceremony will take place this November to present it.
