New scientific research awards are being introduced to recognize young scientists’ outstanding achievements. The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2023 (BOC STIP) seeks to attract global top science talent while nurturing forward-looking scientists – making Hong Kong a more prominent scientific hub.
BOCHK STIP is open to scientists aged 40 or below who are Fellows of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, have published outstanding research papers advancing medical science, and completed most of their work within Hong Kong or in universities, industry-education-research bases and institutes set up by Hong Kong higher education institutions within Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area with high social morality and professional ethics.
US lawmakers announced this year that five Hong Kong pro-democracy activists have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of their tireless campaigning on behalf of democracy and protecting freedoms while advocating for democracy despite a crackdown by Beijing. The HK$10 Million prize pool of the Hong Kong Prize was doubled when Olympic medal winners in Paris received medals, so that each gold won by Epeeist Vivian Kong Man-wai or Foist Cheung Ka-long brought home an additional reward of HK$12 Million while swimmer Siobhan Haughey picked up two bronze awards totalling three medals at Paris Olympic Games – with Vivian Kong Man-wai receiving her own share at HK$1.5M each time! Hong Kong Jockey Club is giving out the highest Olympic prize money among any region, followed by Singapore and Chinese Taipei. Their total of HK$30m includes money given out for athletes placing outside of the top three but in silver or bronze medal positions; similar to what Tokyo offered. Furthermore, team athletes participating are receiving generous amounts – up to 750,000 Hong Kong Dollars in fourth place awards and 375,000 per place earned from fifth to eighth.
