At an awards ceremony held earlier this month, the UC Davis Alumni Association and Equator Prize Foundation awarded $1 Million in grants to projects that address global environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, desertification, etc. Winners will use this funding to improve people’s lives by conserving and restoring environments, improving livelihoods and building resilience to climate-related hazards – winning projects were selected through UNDP’s Small Grants Programme (SGP).

The SGP is a fund established to assist developing countries in mitigating climate change impacts, improving economic opportunities and safeguarding natural environments. Its purpose is to facilitate innovative yet low-cost solutions to combating global climate change. Recently, this fund increased grants given for biodiversity conservation and natural resource management as well as sustainable agriculture initiatives. Over three decades have passed since its introduction through donors supporting UN Development Program donors.

Teachers may nominate up to 10 students for participation. Once selected, students can submit artwork online before the submission deadline. The winning student will receive S$1,400 while their school will also be presented with an additional S$3,500 prize!

Earthshot Prize, an international science award that aims to advance innovation in nature protection and clean air, ocean restoration, waste elimination and climate change mitigation was presented for its third annual edition this week by Jordan’s Queen Rania and actress Cate Blanchett’s 13-member council of experts – and their achievements recognized for tackling Earth’s greatest threats.

SEAP has worked to foster an array of interdisciplinary backgrounds, community engagement activities and collaborative networks over its seventy-year history, which this year’s Lauriston Sharp Prize winners represent. Our generous donors made this possible and Conservation International also provided invaluable expertise on conservation programs and financing to aid us with selecting Prize Winners based on Conservation International criteria. These winners demonstrate SEAP’s mission by being examples of collaboration and teamwork; which remain at its core.
