The HK Prize and Yidan Prize in Hong Kong

At this year’s Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, record numbers of local challengers are competing to capture its coveted crown. Men who finish within three hours (sub 3) for men and three hours 30 minutes for women will each be awarded with an incentive prize of HKD10,000 – an unprecedented prize pool. Furthermore, an incentive award called the Special Incentive Award was introduced this year to recognize and encourage local runners who take up marathon challenges, providing assistance during training and preparation processes.

This year’s competition offers prizes with increased values in each area of History; for instance, the ‘Best Student Performance Prize’ has been raised from HK$10,000 to recognise students with outstanding results at both their B.A. First Examination and Final Examination who choose to pursue History-related studies; similarly, Professor Wang Gungwu Scholarship Fund was expanded from HK$50,000 to HK$100,000 so as to encourage postgraduate research studies within History.

An additional major prize offered is the ICAS Book Prize for Global Hong Kong Studies, awarded every two years at the IPHS Conference International Conference. Books published during either of the two calendar years preceding submission can be submitted. ICAS will publish and honor their chosen winner with a certificate.

Demographer Wolfgang Lutz and members of War Child Alliance have won Hong Kong’s Yidan Prize for their contributions to global education. Through its Can’t Wait to Learn programme, which uses digital technology to turn curricula in various countries into games and help children in war zones catch up on missed learning, they have won this prestigious accolade.

Organisers of the award noted it as a great honour to accept this prize and applauded winners’ efforts and pride in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Post editorial team received special mention for their work with reporter Sammy Heung taking second place for Best Science News Writing and third for Business News Writing respectively.

HKFA accepts films which meet several criteria, including that their director and/or one member of their film crew reside in Hong Kong; commercial release; jury panel determination of winner; in case no winner can be determined, money which would have gone toward first and second prizes is added as a jackpot to be drawn afterward; this continued process was used successfully in 2004 and 2005 with jackpot amounts reaching up to twice of what would have been awarded as 1st division prizes! Depending on who wins this substantial sum of money could make all the difference for their lives!
