The HK Prize – Celebrating Excellence in Science and Technology

The Hong Kong Prize is an annual award that honors scientists whose research has made a significant difference in society. Winners are chosen through an impartial process that excludes sponsorship or committee influence, receiving both monetary prizes as well as opportunities to conduct their studies in Hong Kong.

The winners of the HK Prize are chosen by an international panel of judges from different fields such as science, technology, medicine, business law education and culture. Hong Kong scientists Thein Swee Lay and Stuart Orkin have won first prize in an international competition to find new ways of treating sickle cell disease, an inherited blood condition characterized by painful attacks. Their work highlights how basic discovery, disease research, translational medicine can make an enormous impactful change to patients lives.

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Hong Kong Chapter has initiated the HK Prize as part of their commitment to developing future fraud examiners with an interest in Hong Kong. The Prize seeks to broaden HKU undergraduates’ professional horizon and equip them with essential expertise for fraud prevention, deterrence and investigation through its generous support from Bank of Hong Kong. Hong Kong will host the judging and award ceremony. The Board of Directors, Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team shall be responsible for interpreting the articles of the Charter; suggesting important scientific research areas; appointing members of Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team; fulfilling liaison/coordination duties between these bodies; performing evaluation activities; organizing interdepartmental academic events or science popularization events; as well as other related duties.
