Prince William of Britain arrived in Singapore for his first solo visit since 2012 on Nov. 7. Upon landing at Changi Airport he took in stunning views of its 40-meter Rain Vortex which had been lit green to welcome him, and planted an eucalyptus tree as part of a program which will promote innovative solutions to global warming.
William will take a helicopter tour of Singapore’s cityscape, visit an indoor rainforest-themed park, and meet with local organizations that combat illegal wildlife trade, an estimated $20 billion industry. His visit will also support Earthshot Prize – an initiative set up by him and his Royal Foundation in 2020 to encourage innovative technologies that address climate change mitigation – of which Temasek, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund managed by Singapore’s ruling political family, is now an official founding partner.
At Mediacorp Theatre’s awards ceremony, actors Sterling K. Brown and Emmy-winning host Hannah Waddingham shared stories behind each of this year’s 15 finalists eligible for prizes; winners of the 2024 Singapore Prize will be revealed later this month.
The NUS Singapore History Prize was established in 2014 after receiving an endowment gift from a donor, and is administered by the Department of History at NUS. The prize aims to “recognize exemplary works on any aspect of Singapore and Southeast Asian history”, taking into consideration various genres. Creators from any nationality who publish book-length publications written in English are eligible for entry.
Sonny Liew’s The Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by comic artist Sonny Liew became the inaugural graphic novel to win this prestigious home-grown literary award for works published in Singaporean languages. For 2024’s edition, three new categories will recognize and promote more diverse published works; prize organisers say these changes reflect society’s evolving needs while expanding audiences for Singapore literature.
Neo4j, a graph data platform that helps businesses unlock the value of big data, was awarded Most Innovative Graph Data Platform 2022 at this year’s event, held as part of the World Architecture Festival (WAFX). Neo4j earned this honor due to its ability to integrate multiple sources of data while offering insights that enable organisations to make more informed decisions.
Boris Zak, CEO and co-founder of Neo4j, expressed his appreciation to the judges for selecting his company for this award, calling it a real honor. In his acceptance speech he thanked them for choosing him for it and expressed hope that more people can contribute towards designing the future by joining in creating better tomorrows. Furthermore he acknowledged all nominees as possessing fantastic talent and creativity; these included apps designed to assist blind readers, robots that play chess with humans as well as devices which prevent car accidents.
