The Sidney Prize

A Sidney Prize is an award given in recognition of those who have made significant contributions in a particular field, whether this takes the form of cash awards or public recognition. Prizes may also serve to draw attention to issues facing our world today – for instance, Sidney Hillman Foundation annually awards journalists who highlight major issues like peacekeeping efforts, housing needs and medical care concerns as well as fighting discrimination of all sorts.

Notably, in addition to the Sydney Prize mentioned above, numerous other prestigious Sydney prizes are awarded annually across numerous fields and disciplines. This includes awards given out for writers, artists and individuals who have made a positive difference through their work – among them are awards such as Andrew Gemant Prize which honors individuals who bridge art with science or create literary works that showcase scientific themes. Another popular Sydney prize is Sidney Lanier Prize that awards those who have contributed towards preserving and enriching American South culture while the winner receives a check for $10,000 upon winning it.

Overland magazine and the Malcolm Robertson Foundation jointly present another popular Sydney prize, the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, with its winning entry receiving $5000 plus publication in Overland magazine; two runner-up pieces will each receive $750 prize money.

The Sidney Hillman Foundation was established in 1946 to honor Sidney Hillman’s memory – who died of natural causes while serving as president of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union. The foundation’s founders sought to carry forward his legacy of building a “better America”, believing journalism to be central in this pursuit. At present, it is being managed by former Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America president emeritus and Workers United SEIU chairman Bruce Raynor. The Hillman Foundation has an established history of supporting left-leaning activism and journalism. Their board of trustees includes several Democratic Party members as well as celebrities Danny Glover and Ben Kingsley. Donations come directly from members and the general public alike – they are registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.
